Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynaecomastia means “breast enlargement” caused by an increase in the hormone estrogen and a decrease in the hormone testosterone in men. Therefore, it is an aesthetic defect caused by hormonal imbalances and changes. Breast enlargement occurs when a hard mass appears behind the breast. Due to this mass in the breast, breast enlargement occurs, so it is not an empty growth. During the examination, your doctor can diagnose it manually. So, why does gynaecomastia occur?
Actually, there can be many reasons. The main reasons are; congenital excess estrogen hormone from the mother, hormonal changes in adolescence, some drugs used, alcohol, drugs and some diseases. In researches, it is seen that it occurs mostly during adolescence. Especially in overweight adolescent males, it is even more common. Since there are many reasons, we can say that it is a very common aesthetic defect in men. Gynaecomastia is a condition that can pass spontaneously or with medication support at the end of adolescence. However, when it is observed to be permanent, the remedy is gynaecomastia surgery.
Since breast size also evokes femininity, it is one of the aesthetic defects that negatively affect self-confidence in men. Especially for this reason, gynaecomastia surgery is an operation frequently preferred by men. However, it should be noted that not all enlarged breasts require surgery. Surgery is required for breasts that are too large for liposuction (fat removal) to be sufficient.
How is Gynaecomastia Surgery Performed?
Firstly, the doctor investigates the cause of breast enlargement in the patient. Then he determines the procedure to be applied. If the method deemed appropriate is gynaecomastia surgery, the patient undergoes surgery. This surgery is a surgical operation performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia. Unless any complication develops, the patient is discharged on the same day when performed under local anaesthesia and the next day when general anaesthesia is applied. The operation takes 1 – 1.5 hours on average. Excess skin in the breast is removed and the breast is collected.
Postoperative period is also very important. After the operation, the doctor makes the patient wear a special corset for the tissues to fuse. This corset is expected to be worn by the patient every day for 1 month. Regular use of the corset is necessary for faster healing of the wounds. After the operation, painkillers and antibiotics are given against pain and possible infection risk. The patient is asked to use them regularly. Although a great aesthetic change is experienced in a short time, it takes about 6 months for the breast to heal completely and take its final form.
Patients are usually given rest for a few days due to oedema and pain that may occur in the breast. Heavy activities such as sports and sauna should be avoided for a few days. Sports can be done at least 4 weeks after the operation. For more detailed information about gynecomastia, please contact us.
